Best Resume Format USA 2026: Which Layout Gets Interviews?

Core Careers16 January 20267 min read

Choosing the Right Resume Format Can Make or Break Your Application

Your resume format affects how recruiters perceive your experience. The wrong layout can bury your achievements; the right one makes them shine.

The Three Main Resume Formats

1. Reverse Chronological (Most Popular)

Lists your most recent experience first. This is the format 90% of US employers expect.

Best for:

  • Steady career progression
  • Staying in the same industry
  • Clear employment history
2. Functional (Skills-Based)

Organizes your resume around skills rather than job history.

Best for:

  • Career changers
  • Employment gaps
  • Varied work history
3. Combination (Hybrid)

Combines chronological order with a prominent skills section.

Best for:

  • Senior professionals
  • Those with diverse experience
  • Technical roles

USA Resume Best Practices 2026

  • Length: 1 page for early career, 2 pages maximum for experienced
  • Font: Professional fonts like Calibri, Arial, or Garamond (10-12pt)
  • Margins: 0.5-1 inch on all sides
  • File format: PDF unless specifically asked for Word

Section Order for Standard US Resume

  • Contact information (name, phone, email, LinkedIn, city/state)
  • Professional summary (2-4 sentences)
  • Work experience (reverse chronological)
  • Skills section
  • Education
  • Optional: Certifications, volunteer work
  • What NOT to Include (USA Specific)

    • Photo (illegal discrimination concerns)
    • Date of birth or age
    • Marital status or family details
    • Social Security number
    • Full street address (city, state is sufficient)
    • References (provide separately when asked)

    ATS Considerations

Most US companies use Applicant Tracking Systems. Your format should:

    • Use standard section headings
    • Avoid tables, columns, and text boxes
    • Include keywords from the job description
    • Use a clean, simple layout

Resume vs CV in the USA

In the US, a resume is the standard document for most jobs (1-2 pages). A CV is used only for academic, medical, or research positions and can be longer. This differs from the UK where CV is the standard term for what Americans call a resume.
