How to Explain Employment Gaps on Your CV (Without Lying)

Employment Gaps Are More Common Than You Think

Life happens. Whether it is redundancy, caring responsibilities, health issues, or simply taking time to travel, employment gaps are increasingly common and less stigmatised than ever.

The Truth About Employment Gaps in 2025

Recruiters understand that careers are not always linear:

  • 60% of job seekers have had a career break at some point
  • Post-pandemic attitudes have shifted significantly
  • Hiring managers increasingly value diverse life experiences

Types of Employment Gaps and How to Address Them

1. Redundancy

Do not hide it - redundancies happen to excellent employees:

"Made redundant during company restructuring (March 2024). Used this period to complete Google Analytics certification and volunteer with local charity."

2. Caring Responsibilities

Frame it positively:

"Career break to provide full-time care for family member. During this time, maintained professional development through online courses and industry networking."

3. Health Issues

Keep it brief and focus on your readiness to return:

"Career break for personal health reasons (fully recovered). Stayed current with industry developments and completed [relevant certification]."

4. Travel

Highlight what you gained:

"Twelve-month career break for extended travel. Developed cultural awareness, adaptability, and language skills. Ready to apply international perspective to [industry]."

CV Formatting Strategies

Option 1: Use Years Only

Instead of: "January 2022 - March 2023" Write: "2022 - 2023"

This naturally smooths small gaps without deception.

Option 2: Include the Gap Explicitly

"Career Break | 2023-2024 Professional development, caregiving, and freelance consulting"
