CV References: Who to Choose and How to Ask

Core Careers12 January 20266 min read

Do You Still Need References?

Yes, but the way references work has changed. Most employers request references after interviews, not with initial applications.

Should References Go on Your CV?

Short answer: No

"References available upon request" is outdated and wastes space. Employers assume you will provide references when asked.

Who Makes a Good Reference?

Best choices:

  • Direct line managers
  • Senior colleagues who worked closely with you
  • Clients (for client-facing roles)
  • Professors or tutors (for recent graduates)
  • Avoid:

    • Family members (never appropriate)
    • Friends who cannot speak to your work
    • People who barely know you

    The Reference Request Formula

    Step 1: Ask permission first

"Hi [Name], I am applying for a [role] at [Company] and wondered if you would be comfortable serving as a reference. I particularly valued your insight into my [specific project/skill] and think your perspective would be valuable."

Step 2: Make it easy for them

    Provide:

    • The job description or role summary
    • Your updated CV
    • Key achievements to highlight
    • Likely timeline for contact

    What Employers Actually Ask References

    Common reference check questions:

  • "Can you confirm [candidate]'s job title and dates of employment?"
  • "What were their main responsibilities?"
  • "How would you describe their work ethic?"
  • "What are their key strengths?"
  • "Would you rehire them?"
