How we calculate

Where do Core Careers numbers come from?

Each number on the site has one of four sources, and we say which on the page. Live vacancy counts come from job board APIs. Salary ranges are our own estimates. Take-home pay is calculated from current tax rules. ATS keywords are compiled by our editors from real job adverts.

Live vacancy counts

  • Source: the Reed.co.uk jobs API (UK) for totals by role, and Reed and Adzuna for the listings we show.
  • Refresh: counts are cached for 24 hours and stamped with the time they were fetched.
  • Limits: one board's count, not the whole UK market; the same job can appear on several boards.

Salary ranges

  • Source: Core Careers editorial estimates of the typical range for a full-time role, set per role and adjusted by experience level and location.
  • What they are not: they are not survey medians or official statistics, and we label them "Core Careers estimate" on every salary page.
  • Next: we are adding the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) median for each occupation alongside our range, with a link to the ONS table.
  • Refresh: reviewed when the content date at the top of each page changes.

Take-home pay

  • Method: UK income tax, National Insurance and a 5% workplace pension for a single person on the standard tax code (England); US figures use federal, state (California by default) and FICA with a 6% 401(k).
  • Limits: an estimate for a typical case; student loans, other income, benefits in kind and Scottish rates change the result. Use our take-home pay calculator for your own numbers.

ATS keywords and CV examples

  • Source: compiled by our editors from the skills, tools and qualifications that recur in UK job adverts for each role.
  • Limits: no keyword list beats the advert you are applying to. Mirror its exact wording, and only claim what is true.

Core Careers is run by JG Core Ltd, registered in England and Wales (company no. 16218779). We make money from one-off digital products such as the ATS CV Template Pack and from partner referrals; we do not charge job seekers for introductions to employers.
