Competency-Based Interview Questions: The STAR Method Guide

Core Careers12 January 20269 min read

What Are Competency-Based Interviews?

Competency-based interviews (also called behavioural interviews) focus on how you have handled situations in the past. The premise is simple: past behaviour predicts future performance.

Instead of hypothetical questions like "What would you do if...", you will hear "Tell me about a time when..."

The STAR Method Explained

STAR is your framework for structuring compelling answers:

S - Situation: Set the scene briefly T - Task: Explain your specific responsibility A - Action: Describe what YOU did (not the team) R - Result: Quantify the outcome where possible

Common Competency Questions and STAR Answers

1. "Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer/client"

Situation: "In my role as account manager, a major client threatened to leave after a delivery error affected their product launch."

Task: "I was responsible for resolving the situation and retaining the £80K annual account."

Action: "I immediately called the client to apologise personally, arranged emergency redelivery at our cost, and proposed a 15% discount on their next order. I also implemented a new verification process to prevent future errors."

Result: "The client stayed with us and actually increased their orders by 20% the following year. They specifically mentioned my handling of the crisis as a factor in their loyalty."

2. "Describe a situation where you had to work under pressure"

Situation: "During our annual audit, the lead accountant went on sick leave unexpectedly, two weeks before the deadline."

Task: "As senior accountant, I had to complete the audit preparation while managing my existing workload."

Action: "I prioritised ruthlessly, delegated non-critical tasks to junior team members, and worked extended hours for two weeks. I also created a daily checklist to ensure nothing was missed."

Result: "We completed the audit preparation on time with zero errors flagged. My manager commended my leadership, and I received an early promotion three months later."
