Probation Period

A probation period is an initial phase of employment during which your performance is assessed before your position is confirmed as permanent.

Probation periods are trial phases at the start of employment, typically lasting 3-6 months. During this time, employers assess whether you're right for the role, and you can evaluate whether the job meets your expectations.

During probation, notice periods are often shorter than they'll be once you pass probation. Some benefits may also be restricted until you successfully complete the probationary period. However, you still have basic employment rights from day one.

Probation reviews usually occur at the end of the period, though good employers provide ongoing feedback. The outcome is typically confirmation in role, extension of probation, or termination. Extended probation usually indicates areas needing improvement.

Key Points

  • Typically 3-6 months at the start of employment

  • Some benefits may be withheld until probation is passed
  • Basic employment rights still apply from day one
  • Ends with confirmation, extension, or termination

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be dismissed during probation without reason?

Employers must still act fairly, but with less than 2 years' service you can't claim ordinary unfair dismissal. You're still protected from discrimination and other automatically unfair reasons.

What if my probation is extended?

This usually means there are concerns about your performance. Ask for specific feedback on what needs to improve, and request regular check-ins to demonstrate progress.
