How Long Should a CV Be?

The ideal CV length is 2 pages for most professionals, 1 page for graduates or those with limited experience, and 3+ pages for academics or those with extensive publications.

The right CV length depends on your experience level and industry. The goal is to include everything relevant while keeping it concise enough that recruiters will read it all.

**General Guidelines:** - **Graduates/Early Career (0-2 years):** 1 page is ideal. You likely don't have enough relevant experience to justify more. - **Mid-Career (3-10 years):** 2 pages is the sweet spot. Enough to showcase achievements without padding. - **Senior/Executive (10+ years):** 2 pages still works for most. Focus on recent, relevant roles. - **Academics/Researchers:** 3+ pages acceptable to include publications, grants, and teaching.

The "one page rule" is largely a US resume convention. In the UK, 2-page CVs are standard and expected. What matters most is that every line earns its place—cut fluff, not substance.

Key Points

  • 2 pages is standard for most UK professionals
  • 1 page for graduates or those with <2 years experience
  • Academics may need 3+ pages for publications and grants
  • Every line should add value—cut fluff, not achievements
  • Recruiters spend 6-7 seconds on initial scan regardless of length

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a 3-page CV be rejected?

Not automatically, but it will be skimmed. If you genuinely need 3 pages, make sure page 1 contains your strongest content since that's what gets read most carefully.

Should I reduce font size to fit more on fewer pages?

No. Never go below 10pt for body text. Readability matters more than arbitrary page limits. Cut content rather than making it unreadable.
